Number of young African American women in prison rises

darkjez:

Nikki Jones, a sociologist from UC Santa Barbara and Meda Chesney Lind, University of Hawaii, and attendee of the conference, has studied the statistics of imprisoned black girls for over 10 years and explained, “we have never seen these kind of numbers before,” reports EthnoBlog.

So far, the cause for this epidemic has been attributed to national zero tolerance policies and a justice system that treats girls of color differently than white girls.

“Here’s a lesser-known red flag in the black community: the fastest growing incarcerated population in the country is African American girls and young women. What does not seem to be rising however, is the number of black girls who are actually committing crimes.”

You know what really saddens me?

theshawarmalife:

Somali girls, and dark skinned girls in general who want lighter skin. Who aren’t happy with their skin colour. In Somalia, light skinned girls are considered ‘prettier’. Why? I know a lot of girls who have dark skin and think they’re ugly and try to use dodgy creams and stuff to lighten their skin. Somali men (not all, but a lot of them) prefer women with lighter skin. I met a cousin of mine here whose friends tried to pressure her into buying those creams because she was dark skinned. and her self-esteem was so low that it almost worked. Why can’t we be happy with our skin colour? With our nappy hair? And the sad thing is, as soon as you start to feel okay about yourself, people just bring you down again.

So true im dark skinned and my confidence was so low in Somalia like my own family was like bleach your skin.
